Danish soccer player Christian Eriksen collapsed during a Euro 2020 match from a sudden cardiac arrest. Fortunately, it appears that he will recover; many are not so lucky.
Each year on average, 2,000 apparently healthy people under the age of 25 die after a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), with one high school student dying every three days. A 2017 review of the literature concluded that sudden cardiac death (SCD) is “the leading cause of death” among youth athletes. These authors and others report that the true “rates of SCD appear to be at least four to five times higher than previously estimated” because there is no mandatory reporting system for sport-related deaths.
